Sup HHBoard family! Let's start driving some traffic over here, we got some active bloggers here now putting in a lot of work to bring you entertaining posts. Don't sleep on 'em! That's a perfect segway to introducing my new blog theme schedule. On certain days throughout the week, I'll be bringing you topic specific information. At this point all I have planned is Throwback Thursdays, Fire Fridays and Don't Sleep Saturdays (there may be more soon, like EC Weekly News Review on Sundays). This week's Don't Sleep Saturday focus will be on Joell Ortiz, who is, like Papoose and Saigon, one of the most promising MCs coming out of NYC today.
![]() After generating a street buzz in the NYC metropolitan area, Ortiz began to etch his name in the history books after signing to Interscope Records recording label, particularly Dr. Dre's Aftermath imprint. Hailing from Brooklyn and bringing some of that Latin American influenced hip-hop, combined with his New York swagger, Joell Ortiz continues to amaze his audience with his lyrical inclination. Starting at the age of 13, Ortiz had a way with words; perhaps this was the groundwork for the maturation of Joell Ortiz into an artist that has an undeniable ability to spit on the mic. The inevitable outcome was an MC that has been touted by the underground as one of the most promisng MCs out of NYC. On one of his most recent works, Block Royal , Joell drops a grimy NYC track shouting out DJ Carl Blaze (who was recently gunned down in NY - R.I.P.). His reality-rap content coupled with a booming chorus boasting the hardships of being "block royal" make for a track that should be a part of everyone's library. I'm disappointed by the amount of people that have slept on Ortiz, and I'm patiently waiting (as I'm sure he is too), for him to blow up on the scene and influence the game like I'm certain he will. Don't sleep on this -- and be sure to cop his first LP when it drops! Joell Ortiz - Block Royal Here are some other new tracks that shouldn't be slept on: Artist Title Listen Styles P The Pearly Gates ft.
