06/08/08 - G-Unit Interview

Quinton Hatfield: The new album is called “Terminate on Sight”...ya'll gonna terminate them on sight huh?

Tony Yayo: If you're in our way and going to be a problem of course. You know how the Unit gets down man we not even going to front. We ain’t even gonna brag, but “Terminate on Sight” baby that’s the mind state that we in.

Q: Banks, you feel the same way?

Lloyd Banks: “TOS” is a sequel to “Beg For Mercy”. When we made “Beg For Mercy” it was talking directly to our peers in rap, because everything we talked seemed to be unstoppable. Now we in a time where people agree or disagree with things we might be saying. Therefore everything is taken seriously this year, everybody is competition no allies and terminate on sight. Literally you’ll see a lot of them disappear.

Q: How do ya’ll continue as a group to stay strong? Because you know throughout time people start getting mad when one is outshining the other, but how does G-Unit stay strong from the time ya’ll been in the game up until now?

TY: I can answer that for you, because Banks is a real nigga, 50’s a real nigga, and I’m a real nigga.

LB: [Laughs].

TY: Banks just bought a Lamborghini that’s his money that’s what he do. I got Bentley’s I got my own shit, we all live out our totally different lifestyles like 50 don’t smoke or drink that’s his prerogative. We all got love for each other man. It’s a lot of bitch shit going on and not only in the rap game, but in the streets too. It’s no more loyalty and loyalty is everything. I met Banks grandmother so when I see her I kiss her on the cheek and respect her. I know not to curse in front of her because she will smack me in the back of my fuckin head. It’s no more loyalty and it’s no more respect. As well as 50’s grandmother and my moms. Banks gives my moms all kinds of bags for Christmas and stuff like that. The respect and the love is there man. Sometimes we might get mad at each other or whatever it is, but niggas is men. Niggas might be on the road and you don’t know what can happen. Niggas get tired of seeing each other, thirty hour flights, but niggas go to they room and do them. Niggas got love for each other man. It ain’t no backbiting, a nigga not jealous if this nigga do this. Banks get a lot of bitches, bitches like him, and bitches like me too. I don’t give a fuck. As well as 50, we all got money so it don’t matter to each his own.

Q: Some people will agree that when it came to beef with G-Unit ya’ll basically smashed everybody. Why do you think nobody can stand up to ya’ll and take a chance when ya’ll go at it with somebody?

LB: Usually a lot of people’s misconception is that we start these things it’s not that. It’s just that a smack to a shot is really nothing. That’s basically what’s going on like they throw a smack we throw a shot.

TY: [Yayo makes gunshot noises].

LB: Then we're looked at as the bully, but we don’t initiate it. Honestly a lot of people who really consider themselves to be competition are really out of their prime. It’s really not that big of a topic and I don’t want to be one of those artists built on beef and all that other shit.

Q: Do you think a lot of people hate on G-Unit because basically ya’ll got more money than everybody?

LB: No it’s more talent too it’s not just money. Everybody got money, anybody can get money. It’s not just the money it’s the actual talent and the overall impact that we have on the world.

TY: Yup, you're right!

Q: How was it not really working with Buck on "Terminate On Sight".

TY: It’s a little bit different, but we get the job done. One guy can’t stop the show we gotta get this money and do what we got to do. It is what it is, but besides that the energy is still there. I got songs like “Sean Bell” dedicated to Sean Bell straight out of southside. It’s a real dope album and it’s real aggressive. We're doing something with the Sean Bell Foundation, the G-Unity Foundation, so I mean everything is all good man. 80% of the album is real aggressive. We talking about a lot of issues man and we talking about them on the album.

Q: So ya’ll saying “TOS” will be one of the hottest albums this summer or THE hottest album this summer?

TY: Hands down the hottest album this summer. People want to sing, dance, and do all kinds of shit, but right now people want that aggressive music at the same time too you know. We touching on the realities of life. I’m a high school drop-out not to say I'm ignorant, but I dropped out in the tenth grade so it is what it is. You know what we do, what we do every summer Banks? We count every summer how many niggas get killed. This nigga got killed, this nigga got killed, we at least know ten niggas that get killed every summer or at least five or six. That’s just how it is in the hood and that’s how it is in every hood.

Q: The industry is changing. Everybody is downloading albums and people aren’t selling CDs like they used to. With that being said how do ya’ll see the first week sales of “Terminate on Sight” going?

TY: I can’t predict that, because like you said with downloading and stuff like that. “Return of the Body Snatchers” and “Elephant in The Sand” they got over a million downloads. We have millions of people downloading our stuff, we have people that just want to see what we doing not just with music, but what we doing on a daily basis. It’s all about your performance and your stage presence, because that’s what actually goes into revenue. We just came from Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. They say “Yayo, Banks, 50” they know us. They know “On Fire”, “Hands Up”, “Seductive” and it’s remarkable that every record that the Unit makes is a classic, because they last forever. To this day you can play “In The Club”, “Hands Up” and “On Fire” in the club and even “So Seductive”. Even the records that 50 wrote for Game “This is How We Do” and “MVP”. The dude is an excellent songwriter, Banks is a lyrical assassin, and I feel like I bring the energy to the group. People are going to be real excited by my performance on this album as they didn’t get to hear me the first time. 50 is an excellent songwriter and I’m bringing all kinds of energy into this album, believe in me.

Q: Banks and Yayo I want ya’ll both to answer this question. People would like to know what’s good with the next solo projects?

LB: Actually I got over 100 records in preparation for my next album. “TOS” is what bridges the gap in between the albums. It did it for “Beg For Mercy” and it’s going to do the same thing with “TOS”. It’s giving people an idea of what they can expect on the solo project. That’s why it’s so important and I stress the importance of this album so much it’s like now or never. Also they can expect a new mixtape series that’s going to lead into my solo project so when it comes I’ll be where I need to be as far as TV, radio, and in the street.

Q: Yayo?

TY: Aw man I’m working on it I got about 60 records done too man. I’m actually in the studio everyday. I got to find beats that I like and then I can lyrically just kill it. On this album right here I feel like it’s a competition with 50 and Banks. Banks will get in the booth and ride the shit out of a beat, then 50 will get in and write an amazing hook. 50 can make every song sound different and that’s what he’s a master at. The first eight seconds of a record is important and he’s a master at that. He’s going to touch you within the first eight seconds whether you like or not. Banks is a punchline lyrical assassin, me I’m really nothing but energy. The booth is like a boxing ring.

Q: Given the history of labels and crews like Roc-A-Fella and Ruff Ryders, do you think there might be a time when G-Unit falls down a little?

TY: I don’t think so. I don’t think that will ever happen, because we too consistent. It’s just like Banks said right now it’s to a point where every rapper that’s hot is the ones who sells the most. Not the body of work or mixtapes they put out. I know Tupac and Biggie are turning in they graves the way hip-hop has changed. I look at hip-hop as how many mixtapes you been on, mixtape awards, any kind of plaques in your house, I look at the body of work you put out through your career. I look at LL as a major icon he been doing it since 85. Do you realize how many times you have to switch your style up to still be doing it? Like I said now these days it’s just different, but G-Unit will never fall off. We put out “Elephant in The Sand”, “Return of the Body Snatchers” we took “Rider” Part 2 off the mixtape and it went into radio rotation. Basically to me it’s on the street, the street is what made us not radio...you got to do radio and stuff like that to let people know your record is out. The most important part though is the streets nigga, what the streets like. The label can’t determine what your singles going to be.

Q: But do you think when it comes to having records out you can keep it hood and street but commercial at the same time?

TY: Yeah I believe so. Biggie, Tupac, Big Pun, Big L this was rap for real. Tupac came out with “Hail Mary”, but still made “I Get Around”. I think you gotta be versatile, lyrical, and catchy.

Q: Everybody respects 50 as a businessman. He’s doing all types of business deals with the vitamin water, movies, etc. Are Banks and Yayo going to get into some of this stuff as well?

LB: As we speak right now I’m in the developing stages of my new project. For those that don’t know I released an adult film under my label. This year I’m going back into that venture and they can expect a couple things including the Kama Sutra Edition and it ties back into a safe sex campaign.

TY: I’m actually taking acting classes. We got a movie coming out called “Ski Mask Way” and I’ve been on sets with 50, Pacino, and De Niro. I’m getting into the acting thing, 50 is acting, Banks has his adult films going on, so I’m getting into films man. I’ve been looking at franchises all kinds of things man everyday it’s a new idea being around guys like Banks, 50, Eminem, and Chris Lighty.

Q Ya’ll doing ya’ll thing, but is there anybody else ya’ll feeling in the industry?

TY: Of course the buzz Lil Wayne’s got right now I think he deserves it. He’s been in the game for a long time and it’s good to see him shining. I like Rick Ross, Plies, you know I love Snoop. It’s not like we hate these guys we listen to them. I got Shawty Lo in my car, I got Mavado in my car, Michael Jackson I listen to all kinds of music. There’s a lot of dudes in hip-hop that I’m listening to. I just don’t like DJ Khaled. I don’t like that guy.

Q: Why don't you like DJ Khaled?

TY: He’s just a DJ and wants to be in the limelight. I don’t know I just don’t like this guy, but besides that it’s a lot of rappers that we like.

Q: What about you Banks?

LB: At the moment I got Prodigy's album in my car “H.N.I.C. 2". That’s like one of the hardest albums out to me. Wayne is doing his thing right now from another lane, Lupe Fiasco is doing his thing from another lane. It’s some new artists too if you pay attention to youtube and everything that’s going on. The whole Philly they got like a hundred rappers right now that are definitely going to have a bright future in the upcoming years. It’s so many man. I stay tuned and pay attention to the websites, and everything that’s going on and the mixtapes. I just hope this album right here breathes a breath of fresh air into all of that, especially in New York City hip-hop. We can rekindle that and have a good ’08.

Q: Ya’ll don’t got that Fat Joe “Elephant in The Room”?

LB: Nah I got “Elephant in The Sand”.

TY: I got “Elephant in The Sand” you know I got that in the car.

LB: I’m a be honest with you I had the bootleg. I had his bootleg for a minute but never checked it out or anything, but it is what it is. “Elephant in The Sand”, “Return of the Body Snatchers”, these are mixtapes that have been downloaded over a million times and classics in the hood.

TY: I can just imagine how many downloads the DJ Drama and DJ Whoo Kid is going to get. I can’t wait until that drops. Come on.

Jeez, Yayo cannot have an interview without mentioning 50's name 50 times and saying what a great songwriter he is.

And it's funny how they're saying good stuff about Wayne but fi 50 was still beefing/throwing shots at him, they'd be like "fuck Wayne!".
