R. Kelly Headed Back to Court, Sues Promoters For False Advertising

R&B superstar R. Kelly has sued two nightclub promoters for falsely using his name and image as the main host for one of their recent events in California.

According to TMZ, Kells filed the lawsuit last Friday (August 15) against Toi Crawford and Shane Mooney, promoters at Sugar nightclub in Hollywood, on four charges including violations of statutory right of publicity, common law right of publicity, unfair competition law and false endorsement. The 14-page complaint alleges the singer has endured “irreparable injuries” and “are causing Kelly irreparable harm, and have damaged and continue to damage Kelly in an amount yet to be determined.”

Claiming the flyers, which were intended for a party in late July or early August, were intentionally made with Kells in order to generate a larger audience, the suit reads both defendants pursued the deception “willfully and oppressively, intending to appropriate to themselves without compensation what they knew to be Kelly’s valuable right.”

While no official amount has been demanded besides a minimum of $25,000, the suit makes various including requests that Sugar associates never repeat the same action without written permission, receiving profits made from the nights leading up to the actual party, treble damages reimbursed, trial and attorney charges fully covered.

In related news, promotion for Kells’ next album has received a jump start as new songs recently leaked across the net showing off the singer's more sensual side.

According to Billboard, there is no word yet if the officially unreleased tracks - “Screamer,” “At the Same Time” and “Two Seater” - will be included on Kelly's new album, 12 Play 4th Quarter, but the songs do recall the more sultry sounds of his '93 record of the same name.

12 Play 4th Quarter is expected to come at the end of this year on Jive.
