![]() Children Of Men Dir: Alfonso Cuaron Universal Pictures It's 2027...the world's female population has been infertile for almost two decades, and the world is in a chaotic state, the human race destined to become extinct. Intriguing, but still a much more conventional premise for an Alfonso Cuaron-film, who is most recognized from his abstract project Y tu mama tambien and his unique approach in directing the third installment of the Harry Potter series- The Prisoner of Azkaban. Cuaron translates his talents towards this latest sociological thriller, Children Of Men, which takes very few breaches in action throughout the film, yet maintains its dark and realistic tone for close to two hours in running time. The film's star character- Theo Faron, is played expectedly well by the ever-consistent Clive Owen, and while Faron's character isn't exactly written as well as expected, save his interesting back story, Owen is perfect as the pessimistic activist turned 9 to 5 worker, who bares the task of protecting the world's first pregnant woman in 19 years (Kee). With the help of some unexpected companions, including the outstanding Michael Caine as Jasper, Theo must attempt to keep Kee and her unborn child from just about everyone on the planet. After being thrust into the midst of bombings and gunfire in the outskirts of England (which serves as a refugee camps for all illegal immigrants), Theo, Kee, and her newborn child must fight through the "Uprising" in order to meet up with the "Human Project", a secret organization meant to ensure the continuation of the human race. Cuaron's portrayal of the "Uprising" is eerily realistic, and while the effective action scenes are reminiscent of present-day war in the Middle East, the film missteps in the resolution to its main conflict. Nearing an hour and 45 minutes, Children Of Men does a nice job of maintaining the audience's interest for most of the flick, but the somewhat confusing plot would have been better served by a tighter editing job, mixed with the addition of some stronger character development for both Theo's opposition, as well as the "miracle character," Kee. The topics of religion, cultural diversity, war, and science are all tackled by Cuaron, but they seem to contradict each other several times during the film. However, Cuaron's brilliance is shown through his ability to join the harsh realities of the present to the possible horrors of the future, and while some aspects of the film, including its basic premise, seem over the top, they only bring out the idea that we continue to ignore the problems we are faced with in 2007, problems which could escalate into something much larger.
