Gnarls Barkely St. Elsewhere Downtown/Atlantic Records St. Elsewhere really isn't as "Crazy" as Cee-Lo (vocalist) and Danger Mouse (producer) would lead you to believe- from the album's multi-coloured cover work to its leading single (and its accompanying video for "Crazy") , Gnarls Barkley seems about as "out there" as it gets in urban music. But in reality, Gnarls debut set isn't nearly as strange as expected, but that's a good thing, as the strange duo thread the line of pop and urban alternative music effortlessly for 14 solid tracks of fun. The veteran Cee-Lo Green displays an impressively unique set of vocals throughout the LP, and Danger Mouse, who has taken over the production duties for several other artists, most notably, MF Doom, brings to the table arguably his best set of beats to date. The leading single "Crazy" is an intriguing mix of violins and light drum patterns complimenting the soulful crooning of Cee-Lo, before Gnarls takes a trip to introduce us to St. Elsewhere, and although the lyrics to this, and many other songs are confusing to say the least, they nonetheless carry sentimental and sheer sonic value. "Smiley Faces" has Danger showing off his knack for catchy sampling, which Cee-Lo surrounds with thoughtful lyrics about breaking through facades, and "The Last Time" is an up-tempo ballad that closes the album of a high note. Danger Mouse's beat-making on St. Elsewhere is just about as good as its gets, from his heavy sampling, down to the varied drum and piano arrangements on each song. And although "Transformer" breaks what would otherwise be a perfectly flowing album, the synchrony of Gnarls is highly impressive, and it makes for an entertaining trip to St. Elsewhere.
